Carroll County Cake Swap

Box art

A card game for baking perfectionists and those who like to sabotage them.

  • Players: 2-6
  • Ages: 8+
  • Play Time: 10-30 min.

Put on your apron and grab your mixing bowls as you race for ribbons in the cake decorating contest at the Carroll County Fair. Create the tallest, most beautiful cakes by stacking layer upon layer of frosted sweetness. Will you go slow and steady to build the perfect cake? Or rush to submit your cakes ahead of the competition? It’s quantity vs. quality in this game for the whole family.

HOW TO PLAY

SET UP

Each player starts with a character card and three action cards: swap, swipe, and squeeze.

starting setup layout

CREATING CAKES AND WINNING RIBBONS

On your turn, you’ll either press your luck by drawing the top card of the deck, or draft a visible card that someone else has passed on using. You don’t have to play the card you drew, but if you don’t play it, you must make it available for someone else, discarding it face up to the table so anyone else can select it on their turn.

As you select a card to use, you’ll stack cake layers from largest to smallest, bottom to top.

Once your cake is at least three layers tall, you can submit it to be judged on your turn, and win a ribbon. The ribbon you get depends on several qualities, including the size and pattern of your cake.

6 judging categories and accompanying ribbons

The color of the ribbon you win depends on the size of your cake. Three-layer cakes earn white ribbons, four-layer cakes earn red ribbons, and five-layer cakes earn blue ribbons.

Each category of judging has a different pattern requirement. Form patterns with different combinations of chocolate and vanilla cakes, and five flavors of frosting (plus a wild frosting).

Earn points for cakes that are all chocolate or all vanilla.

You can also try and build cakes that are all different frosting flavors, or all the same.

For the most points, go for tall cakes that are all the same cake flavor, and all the same or all different frosting flavors.

ACTION CARDS

Need some extra help? Use your three action cards to thwart the competition or boost the quality of your cake! A swipe card lets you steal from another player. Swap lets you exchange a layer you’ve already placed with a different one. And squeeze lets you sneak a larger layer under a smaller layer. Feeling strategic? Combine them to really sweeten your victory!

The first player to score 31 or more points wins! (For 2-4 player games). If the deck runs out of cards and no one has reached the required amount of points, the game ends immediately. Whoever has the most points wins. If there is a tie, whoever has the ribbon worth the highest amount wins.
